So if you want to get entered to WIN this BOX OF BOOKS, comment on the next few posts and make sure to follow this blog so you don’t miss anything because who knows what I’ll do next! :D

_______________

I don’t think there’s much I can say about Cassandra Clare and her books that you might not already know. Like a) they are fabulous filled with complicated and tortured characters, incredibly rich and layered world and adventures that are of epic proportions. or b) that she’s one of the most hilarious people I know. Or c) her characters are put through hell and she likes her killing sprees.

Cassie is one of the people I look to most for recommendations and I love all the picks she’s recommend here today! Check it out!

Q: What kind of books do you like reading? Do you read in your genre?

Weirdly, not really. I do sometimes but I love contemporary romance (Anna and the French Kiss) and detective novels (anything by Anne Perry) as well as historicals. I like a good dystopia (Scott Westerfeld’s Pretties/Uglies) and I love horror.
Q: What book do you wish you had written?
Interview with the Vampire.
Q: What is one genre or topic you wish you could write?
I wish I could write a hardboiled detective novel. I just don’t think I have the turns of phrase in me.
Q: What books do you recommend (that are out or about to be out, ones you blurbed?)
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, Shine by Lauren Myracle, Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson, and I just read Suzanne Young’s A Need So Beautiful and enjoyed it.

Friends With Benefits- a movie review

Thursday, July 14, 2011       •       1 Comment

I haven’t done this before much outside of select comments on Twitter, but I was inspired to write up a review of FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

So a few months ago these two trailers came out:

AND

Kinda similar in theme. A hot chick hooking up with a hot dude in hopes that it’ll just be casual and they’ll have fun without having to worry about dating and issues around that. No string attached.

I saw No Strings Attached and I loved it. I loved Natalie Portman most of all. Then I saw Friends With Benefits last night. And I love JT and Mila.
I must admit that with each movie JT acts in, I get more and more impressed. Last night proved that. I’ve always loved Mila for her cute charm and charisma and comedic timing. And JT and Mila were superb in FWB.

Best of all not only was this movie HILARIOUS filled with snark and sarcasm and punchy one liners but it had heart. I teared up a few times. And although we ALL know how this movie will end, I love the journey it took me on.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS comes out next Friday, July 22. I highly recommend you go see it!

Oh and with a marketing little tool like this funny PSA… who wouldn’t go see it?

BTW, let me know if you want me to do these kinds of these things. Want more movie reviews?

Recommend Me a Book… with Victoria Schwab

___________

So far I’ve had Carrie Ryan recommend some of her favorite books as well as Kami Garcia. One of the books they had in common is also a fave of mine, Victoria Schwab‘s THE NEAR WITCH! It’s such lush story and setting with characters that are intriguing and a world that is mysterious and just a bit hazy around the edges!

I asked Victoria about her recommendations and below are some great books even I myself am looking forward to reading!

Q: What kind of books do you like reading? Do you read in your genre?

A: I honestly read across the spectrum. My reading tastes are as fickle as my food tastes. Some days a thriller sounds good. Other days a paranormal. I used to say “I don’t read this” or “I don’t read that” but then I’d find a book in that genre that would make me eat my words. Now I’m open to try anything.

As far as reading in my genre, I do, but only when I’m not actively drafting.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

A: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

Q: What is one genre or topic you wish you could write?

A: I wish I could write light realism. I fail at both lightness AND realism.

Q: What books do you recommend (that are out or about to be out)

A: Three books that I’ve read recently and LOVED (and this shows you how varying my tastes are: BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by Ruta Sepetys, LEGEND by Marie Lu, and LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR by Stephanie Perkins.

I find myself constantly asking online what everyone is reading what they like or don’t like. I nag trusted friends for recommendations and I love hearing what book are loved out there. So I asked some of my authorly friends and authors whose books I love and want to recommend to YOU (if you haven’t read it,yet!)

Yesterday I had Carrie Ryan and today I am featuring two authors (author #2 to come later today) since I had crazy pants day yesterday.

I don’t know how many of you have read Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl‘s series. the Caster Chronicles, which includes BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS and the upcoming BEAUTIFUL CHAOS. And not to forget the upcoming e-book DREAM DARK.

There’s much I can say about Kami and Margie’s books but I’ll spare you my endless raving to a few things that you need to know. The Caster Chronicles series isn’t your typical paranormal romance mostly because the reader will have a romance of their own with the lush southern setting, the twisty plot, and the utterly complex characters.

So, I wanted to find out from Kami what she wishes she could write and what she recommends to you. What I love about Kami is that since she comes from a teaching background she ALWAYS throws in great classic recommendations. Check them out below and don’t forget to comment to be entered into that big box of books giveaway.

Q: What kind of books do you like reading? Do you read in your genre?

I love fantasy (especially urban fantasy), science fiction, folklore, non-fiction, poetry, and some contemporary. I will really read anything if the story is amazing or the topic is interesting.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Q: What is one genre or topic you wish you could write?

Contemporary, because it seems hard.

Q: What books do you recommend?

There are too many, so here are a few we blurbed this year that I obviously love:

THE DARK AND HOLLOW PLACES by Carrie Ryan

THE DEMON’S SURRENDER by Sarah Rees Brennan

FROM BAD TO CURSED by Katie Alender

THE NEAR WITCH by Victoria Schwab

Classics I love:

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee

THE OUTSIDERS by S.E. Hinton

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE by Diana Wynne Jones

THE GIVER by Lois Lowry

THE WHITE MOUNTAINS by John Christopher

FREAK THE MIGHTY by Rodman Philbrick

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES by Ray Bradbury

CARRIE by Stephen King

A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND by Flannery O’Connor

Recommend Me a Book… with Carrie Ryan

So today I have Carrie Ryan. She’s not only an extremely gifted writer but she’s the sweetest zombie loving southern gal I know!

If you don’t know Carrie’s books you should. Check out her website, watch the book trailers and order the books because no one has done zombies or dystopian quite like her.

So I asked Carrie a few questions about what she likes to read and what she recommends. Check out it out below and don’t forget to comment and let me and Carrie know what you think!
Q: What kind of books do you like reading? Do you read in your genre?

I read a lot of YA — I just love it so much! This year I made a resolution to read more outside of YA so I’ve been reading a lot more middle grade, adult, horror and romance. In my beach bag right now I have a few ARCs from ALA, my eReader with a few friends’ manuscripts, a book on writing craft, the 10th book in the 39 Clues series and Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. I’ve really been enjoying reading such a variety!

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

There are so many amazing books I’d love to have written. Just this week I finished When a Monster Calls written by Patrick Ness based off an idea Siobhan Dowd and illustrated by Jim Kay. WOW! Just wow on so many levels! I’d also love to have written the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld — so good!

Q: What is one genre or topic you wish you could write?

Hmmm, that’s a good question! I don’t know if there’s any topic I wouldn’t write if I were interested in it. I really loved reading horror growing up and I’d love to see it make a comeback.

Q: What books do you recommend?

One book that I read and just loved is The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab which is coming out August 2nd — such a beautifully written book with great atmosphere. I also loved The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell which came out this spring — I’m just a huge fan of her writing. Another book that blew me away was Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter — reading that book felt like being in one of the most fun movies ever (if you love Ocean’s Eleven and/or The Thomas Crowne Affair you will just adore Ally Carter’s Heist Society series!)
